3. Unmodified ECT (Psych)

Currents crack through unshielded veins,

a jolt to quell relentless pains.

No muscle relaxants, no anesthesia’s shield,

just raw convulsions, the body unhealed.

Mid-century wards, lined in rows,

patients subjected, consent often froze.

Severe depression, catatonia, agitation,

treatments given with clinical determination.

Currents curl, convulsions clash,

muscles move, and memories flash,

do the echoes linger, tight and brash?

By modern standards, safeguards reign,

modified ECT now soothes the brain.

Yet echoes linger, vivid and true,

lessons in shock, both cruel and new.
